Introducing Karla - basketry with creativity and care

Teaching beginners and crafting handmade baskets across Scotland and Wales

Karla Pearce combines her love of education and creativity to share the art of basketmaking through workshops, tuition and commissions.

My journey into basketry

I’ve always been a creative maker, with a decades-long interest in plants, gardening and the natural environment. My fascination with weaving natural materials began while experimenting with plant supports for my garden, and it quickly grew into a love of basketry.

I first learned from local basketmakers through the Northumbria Basketry Group, before seeking opportunities to study with renowned basketmakers in the UK, Ireland, Spain and Denmark. I went on to train intensively through the City & Guilds accredited one and two year basketry courses at Westhope College in Shropshire.

I WORK WITH SUSTAINABILITY IN MIND

My work

Using traditional basketry techniques from around the world, I create both functional baskets and more contemporary sculptural forms. Into my work I weave garden plant fibres, usually homegrown or foraged locally, alongside more traditional materials such as willow, bark, rush, pine needles and marram grass (harvested under licence as it is a protected species).

I aim to produce beautiful baskets from natural materials with as little negative impact on our environment as possible. Every form I make reflects my connection to the natural world, which continues to inspire me daily.

I loved this weekend's course. Thank you so much for your excellent teaching. I am amazed by my first basket & so were my neighbours when I stopped to show them!!! It was definitely one of the best courses I have ever done, thanks to you. You explained the processes so well.

Teaching and Sharing Skills

As a trained teacher, I understand the importance of keeping cultural heritage alive. I love helping beginners make their first baskets in a friendly, supportive environment, while also encouraging more experienced basketmakers to develop their skills through progressive, multi-session programmes.

I run workshops for small groups in local village halls, as well as offering 1:1 tuition from my home studio in Bangor, North Wales. You’ll also find me teaching at venues such as the Big Tree Society in Ancrum, Scottish Borders, and at Westhope College in Shropshire.

Where to find my work

My baskets are available to buy through this website, at contemporary craft events throughout the year, and at galleries including Mostyn Gallery in Llandudno, North Wales, and Buy Design Gallery in Ancrum, Scottish Borders.

I also welcome commissions for bespoke work.

Community and connections

I’m proud to be a committee member of the Basketmaker’s Association and to serve as chairperson of the Northumbria Basketry Group.

Both roles allow me to support and connect with others who share my passion for weaving and preserving the craft of basketry.
