Can I book you for private tuition or small group workshops, and where are your classes held in Scotland and Wales?

I teach across the Scottish Borders, the Lothians, Cumbria, Northumberland and at various locations in North Wales.

I have been invited to teach further afield at Westhope College in Shropshire. I run a variety of willow, bark and pine needle basket making courses.

I teach beginners to more experienced Basketmakers, helping you develop your skills wherever you are on your basketmaking journey.

In addition to my advertised workshops I can teach private groups either at local village halls or in a space you provide. I am able to provide tutoring in different styles and at different levels to suit you so why not consider a basketmaking workshop for a family or team-building experience, a birthday treat, as part of your holiday, or even a hen do!

Contact me if you'd like to book or have any further questions.

Basketmaking FAQs

Are all of your baskets handmade, and what materials do you use?

Basketmaking is an ancient craft going back thousands of years. In every part of the world baskets have always been woven by hand, using whatever natural materials were available locally.

I carry on this heritage by creating baskets out of natural materials that I forage locally, including pine needles, bark and various plant leaves which I make into cordage.

I weave with willow harvested from my own plots and other local plots. I supplement this with commercially grown willow from Somerset.

Do you take custom commissions for specific basket styles or sizes?

If you are looking for something specific that’s not available to purchase in the shop, I can make any basket to your requirement as a commission.

The current lead time is 8 weeks. I would be delighted to discuss with you so please get in touch.

How should I care for and clean my willow basket?

Willow baskets are beautiful and practical items with a wide range of uses.

If taken care of they will last for decades, but may benefit from cleaning regularly, depending on where and how they are used and stored. There are several different ways you can clean a willow basket without damaging it.

1.    Vacuum: Use a vacuum hose attachment to gently remove the dust, cobwebs, etc. from your willow basket.

2.    Scrubbing brush: Use a dry, soft scrubbing brush to get into those hard-to-reach places. When doing this, work gently and be careful not to damage the basket.

3.    Gentle eco detergent / white wine vinegar solution: Wipe your willow basket with a cloth dampened with a mild, wood-safe detergent.

A 1:4 white wine vinegar/water solution in a spray bottle is also safe to use.Use a dry towel to blot away any excess moisture. Let the basket air dry in a well-ventilated area – natural drying is best. Ensure the basket base is raised off a flat surface so that air can get underneath.

4. Warm water soak: If your willow basket is really muddy, it can be fully immersed in warm water for a short period of time to lift the dirt. Then wipe with a damp cloth and dry as above.

Do you offer basket repairs, and how can I request one?

Willow baskets may become damaged over time. Damages can often be repaired, so if you want to extend the life of a special basket, get in touch to discuss.
